Editorial draft — check before you travel

Chongqing rail transit is more than transportation: on certain routes, it’s a memorable way to see the city. But the mountain landscape means journeys can feel different from the map.

This is an introductory guide; verify current lines, payment methods and service hours using official transit information before relying on it.

Start with the station, not just the neighborhood

A single neighborhood may have several rail stations. And two exits of one station can lead to streets at very different elevations.

When planning a route, note the station name, line, transfer and exit number. After arrival, follow the actual signage before opening your map again.

Why exits matter so much

Chongqing’s slopes and elevated roads create unusual pedestrian routes. An entrance may be many levels above a road you can see below. Don’t assume that a landmark visible across the street is just one easy crossing away.

If you’re traveling with large luggage, allow time for elevators and step-free routes when available.

A note about Liziba

Liziba on Line 2 is famous for the train running through a building. It attracts photographers, but rail transit is a working public transport system. Use designated public viewing spaces and follow posted instructions.

Tickets and mobile payment

Payment services and transport ticket formats can change. Confirm which options your own bank or mobile wallet supports, and carry an alternative if possible.

A calmer way to travel

  1. Look up the destination and its Chinese name.
  2. Record the destination station and the correct exit.
  3. Check the final pedestrian segment, including changes in elevation.
  4. Allow buffer time during busy commuting periods.
  5. If unsure, use station information desks or official signs.
