Editorial draft — check before you travel

Chongqing is not a city you can understand by following a straight line on a map. Streets overlap, bridges connect different heights, and the best experience often comes from leaving a little time unscheduled.

This three-day itinerary is a planning starting point, not a fully field-checked route. Exact travel times, ticket arrangements and opening hours should be checked shortly before your trip.

Day 1 — Get to know the river city

Start in Jiefangbei, a convenient downtown area with shops, food and transport connections. Give yourself time to find your bearings before trying to tick off too many places.

Later, explore the riverside area around Hongyadong. The contrast between the hillside buildings and the river is part of the appeal. Crowds can be heavy at popular photo spots, so allow extra time and follow local pedestrian signs.

A sensible rhythm: downtown walk → relaxed meal → riverside evening. Don’t force three distant attractions into your first afternoon.

Day 2 — Discover the mountain-city layers

A ride on Chongqing Rail Transit Line 2 introduces the city’s dramatic topography. Liziba Station is well known for the train passing through a building; look for signed public viewing areas rather than standing in traffic.

Leave the remainder of the day for exploring nearby streets or another neighborhood at your own pace. A route that looks short on a map might involve several levels of stairs and elevated walkways.

Local-planning note: compare transit stations and their exits before leaving. Two exits from the same station can put you on quite different levels.

Day 3 — Slow down and choose your own angle

Keep your third day flexible. You might revisit a favorite neighborhood, browse cafés, or spend extra time at a viewpoint. Another option is to plan a separate excursion outside the dense city center, but check the journey carefully: Chongqing municipality covers a very large area.

Where should you stay?

For a short first visit, consider locations with straightforward transit access. Jiefangbei is a practical starting point if the itinerary focuses on downtown attractions. Other areas may suit visitors seeking a quieter evening or a different neighborhood atmosphere.

Read the neighborhood guide for a clearer comparison.

Before you go

  • Save important addresses in both English and Chinese.
  • Leave more time for hills, stairs and large station complexes than an ordinary map suggests.
  • Check official transport notices and attraction pages for changes.
  • Consider accessibility and luggage before booking accommodation on steep streets.
